What is Mediation?

Doing Divorce Differently:

Mediation is a conflict resolution process that allows clients to avoid the adversarial legal system and stay out of the courtroom. While lawyers are usually consulted for legal advice, it is not necessary to hire a lawyer in order to get a divorce in Ohio. Divorce & Family Mediation is a process that allows participants to control the timing, outcomes, and costs of pursuing a divorce or to reach other agreements outside of court concerning parenting and financial issues. After mediation is complete, couples file their own documents to legalize the agreements. Your mediator will walk you through the necessary forms as you complete them.

A mediator is a neutral, third party to your conflict who does not "decide" who is right or wrong in a dispute. The mediator's goal is a fair and equitable settlement for BOTH parties. Many conflicts in families can revolve around blame, extreme emotions, and long-standing resentment. Sometimes two people can no longer have productive conversations by themselves. A mediator understands the high stakes of family conflict and provides a safe, caring, empathetic, and open environment in which difficult issues can safely be addressed. Many different options and creative solutions to problems will be brainstormed, debated, and analyzed during the mediation sessions. No agreements will be signed until BOTH parties are satisfied with the outcomes. A mediator's main focus is facilitating tough conversations and making sure that both party's voices are heard and negotiating power is balanced.
